Sunday, Oct 4 John Wesley Powell: The Man, The Myth, The Mystery. Richard Quartaroli, Special Collections and Archives, NAU On the 140th anniversary of John Wesley Powell's 1869 pioneering river trip down the Green and Colorado Rivers, researchers are still discovering new information about the Major and his life. Powell has most often been described as: a soldier, who lost his right arm in the Civil War battle at Shiloh; explorer and adventurer, for his 1869 and 1871-72 river trips through terra incognita of the American southwest; and scientist, for his work in geology and anthropology. But he was also: a consummate government bureaucrat, wheeling and dealing in Washington D.C. as the 2nd director of the U.S. Geological Survey and the 1st director of the Bureau of Ethnology; and a visionary for his recognition of the west as the "Arid Lands." "CubeGuard" Cubicle Message Barrier Stops Workplace Interruptions & Increases Productivity
Creative banners & custom messages provide new ways to reclaim your personal office space  www.cubeguard.com

(Santa Clara, California) - Based on U.S. Census Bureau data, there are an estimated 50 million+ cubicle workers in U.S. businesses today.  These workers all share a common problem - interruptions from other co-workers or visitors to their cubicles, wasting time and reducing productivity. Until now, there has been no effective way to prevent interruptions while working on important  tasks. But now a unique new product called the CubeGuard Cubicle Message Barrier helps solve this challenge by providing a retractable message banner that is easily mounted across a cubicle or office entryway. This fun yet functional new communication tool lets workers prevent productivity interruptions before they start by sharing a colorfully direct message like "DO NOT DISTURB" or "GO AWAY" to ward off unwanted interruptions from co-workers.

"Workers lose a significant amount of time to unnecessary interruptions, and the time it then takes to refocus on work after each interruption," said Jonathan B. Spira, Chief  Analyst at Basex, a knowledge economy research firm, and author of Managing the Knowledge Workforce. "Such interruptions cost the U.S. economy hundreds of billions of dollars.  Low-tech solutions such as barriers can play a role in reducing the extent of this problem."How Does CubeGuard work? CubeGuard is designed to fit into any professional office environment and comes in a variety of photo-quality print designs and messages. It attaches in seconds by either velcro or magnets to each side of the cubicle entryway and fits openings of up to 50 inches wide. Users simply pull the message banner across their cubicle entryway when they need to prevent interruptions or to share their availability status. Changing the message status is as easy as swapping out message cartridges.

"Workers who have used the CubeGuard thus far are amazed at how effective this simple tool is in helping them reclaim some personal space," says John Stanton, CEO of CubeGuard, a 20 year veteran of the cubicle world. "It allows an employee to focus on his/her priorities and not those of the interrupters." Adam Wilson, one of CubeGuard's early beta testers agrees. "It works. It turns away all those time-hogs that lurk at your cube and suck your time away. I'm saved from them at least five or ten times every day."To put this in perspective and to show how a product like this can help save a company hundreds of thousands of  dollars annually, CubeGuard even has a Return On Investment (ROI) Calculator that allows a company to input data about their employees' office habits to determine how much time is wasted each year: http://www.cubeguard.com/roi-calculator.html

Workers can pick from an assortment of background designs and create personalized messages to be custom printed. Companies can also personalize CubeGuard with customized designs and messages for their staff, for product launches or as a branded marketing giveaway. CubeGuard Complete comes with one message cartridge for a suggested retail price of $19.99. Custom messages are available for $29.99. Additional message cartridges (without mounting kit) are priced at $14.99 each for standard and $24.99 each for custom. Corporate orders are priced based on volume and extent of customization. CubeGuard is available now at www.CubeGuard.com and at select Fry's Electronics locations nationally.

New Instant Handbag Hanger Is As Attractive As It Is Functional -
"Clipa" Provides A Handsome Hook To Keep Purses & Handbags Off The Floor
www.clipa.us
(Irvine, California) - It has been described as jewelry for your handbag, but it is much more practical than that. The Clipa is a sleek, circular
handbag hanger that clips effortlessly to any handbag strap. Clipa protects and extends the life of the handbag by preventing germs, water, dirt, and more  from coming into contact with the bottom of the bag. The 3-inch diameter,  bracelet-like Clipa has non-slip clip pads on each end, making it perfect for hanging almost any bag.

In fact, the patent-pending Clipa safely hangs handbags, backpacks, cases, purses, totes, book bags, diaper bags, umbrellas and more. The Clipa's durable, heavy-duty construction makes it ideal for most bags including today's larger handbags. It can be used with single and double-strap bags and is so elegant it can even be worn as a bracelet or bangle. Unlike other hangers on the market, the Clipa always stays on the handbag for instant access-there's no need to hunt inside the handbag for it. That's why it has been called "the instant handbag hanger."To use, simply open one end and slide Clipa onto the strap: Clipa's spring mechanism will automatically close. To hang a handbag, place one end of the Clipa on the table or other surface and hang the bag from the other end. When ready to leave, simply pull the handbag strap and let Clipa fall back onto the bag, ready for next time. For bathroom stalls, just guide Clipa up and back onto the bag. This handy item is perfect for restaurants, bars, outdoor cafes, sporting events, concerts, movie theaters (hang bag from the seat back in front of you or on the drink holder), poolside, and especially bathrooms where a hook isn't always available. It works on most tabletops, counters, chairs arms and backs, bathroom stall walls, rails, cubicle walls, fences, even many sinks. Also works great in airplane lavatories where there
are handles but no hooks.

The Clipa's timeless, modern design blends in with most handbag hardware. Clipa, which means "instantly" in Romanian, is made from high strength zinc alloy and is made in the U.S. from North American parts.

The Clipa sells for $24.95 and comes in polished silver or gold, brushed gold or hematite (gunmetal) and is available at: www.clipa.us.For more information please visit: www.clipa.us or call Topcor at: (888) 804-0661. ABC NEWS STORY YOUR PURSE COULD BE MAKING YOU SICK

Upcoming designers, homemakers, small business owners, and graphic artists now have the ability to print their own design with no color limitations, on a wide variety of fabric qualities such as cotton, linen, silk and more.

New Water Conservation Technology Saves Water In Homes & Businesses
H2Orb Lowers Water Bills, Stops Toilet Overflows & Reduces Costly Property Damage
www.theH2Orb.com  (Westminster, California) - It is estimated that a leaking or stuck open toilet flapper can lead to more than 6,000 gallons of wasted water flow in a single day. For one Arizona man, an open flapper on a toilet in one of his unattended rental properties led to water leakage for over two weeks and a whopping bill of over $2800 for the month. According to the EPA and the American Water Works Association, the toilet is the number one water wasting appliance in the house.

But now a unique toilet technology called the H2Orb Water Management System is being launched to flush that problem away for consumers.  The patented H2Orb by AquaOne Technologies, LLC is an answer to the problem of toilet leaks, stuck open flappers, leaky fill valves and more. If the toilet begins to run excessively, the H2Orb's integrated smart valve, designed around Texas Instruments technology, intercepts the flow of water to the toilet
tank before the leak becomes a huge problem and expense. Conversely, if the water level in the bowl gets too high, the H2Orb shuts off the water supply so not even a second flush is possible.  H2Orb's audible alarm and easily
visible control panel screen also alert you that a fault has occurred in the system.

Obviously, the H2Orb is environmentally friendly because of its water-saving capabilities. And from a cost-savings standpoint, the H2Orb can pay for itself in water savings within the first year just by stopping a leaky toilet. Another added bonus is that installing an H2ORB system is simple and can be completed in less than 10 minutes.

The H2Orb is the brainchild of AquaOne Technologies, LLC, the company that launched the infamous Fish n Flush toilet tank aquarium a few years back: www.fishnflush.com

Strangely enough, water conservation was not even the original purpose of the H2Orb. It was initially designed to eliminate simple toilet overflows that dump just a gallon or two of water on the floor. That design was in
response to the unfortunate death of a 90-year-old Alzheimer's patient. While staying at a senior living facility, the man often overflowed his toilet. One day after an overflow, he slipped on the standing water on the floor, breaking his hip. A few months later, he passed away due to complications from the injury.

AquaOne Technologies, LLC Founder Richard Quintana was the facilities director at that nursing home at that time. He was unable to find a quality and effective overflow prevention device on the market, so Quintana set forth to invent the first of a generation of quality products from AquaOne Technologies, LLC leading to the launch of the H2Orb Water Management System.

The H2Orb retails for $127 and is available at: www.theH2Orb.com For more information call: 866.598.3474

BEAUTY NEWS
It’s time to get gorgeous for summer with Mally Beauty (www.mallybeauty.com), founded by Mally Roncal, one of the most sought-after celebrity makeup artists in the industry. She has worked with some of the top A-list trendsetters including Beyonce, Hayden Panettiere, Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Rihanna and more.

Celebrated for her fun, flirty and girly approach to beauty, Mally has created 4 new easy-to-use, high performance products, all of which are on-trend with the season’s hottest celebrity looks.

TREND ALERT- Summer Glow  Effortless beauty is this summer’s anthem. Hayden Panettiere’s flawless tan and minimal makeup can be easily achieved with 3 color products from Mally Beauty.

Bronzer: Begin with Bronze Genius ($45; qvc.com), which gives a believable sun-kissed look with no shimmer! Start applying just under the ear and go around the face to warm the perimeter. Then do a light dusting around the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin.

Subtle Flush:Pro Natural Lip & Cheek Rouge ($20; qvc.com) can be applied to the apple of the cheeks, as well as the lips and highest part of your eyebrow to lift the face and add a faint flush of color.

Lips:One swoop of the Facets Gemlights Lipgloss ($20; qvc.com) lends a subtle shimmer for a sophisticated, elegant and full lip. Use over the Pro Natural Lip & Cheek Rouge for a more dramatic look.

TREND ALERT- BOLD EYES Bold eye shades are this must-have in Hollywood. While her look has an 80’s influence, Rihanna’s modern vibrant eyes screams summer 2009.

Start by applying a shadow base, followed by a translucent powder all over the lids. This combination will keep your shadow from creasing or fading. Use the Evercolor Starlight Waterproof Liner ($25; qvc.com) in Caribbean Sea shade (the perfect summer hue) around the lid, extending the line slightly past the end of the eye. Finish with a soft pink blush and nude lip to balance the eyes.

New Mockumentary Lampoons Ponzi Scheme Rip-Offs Like Madoff's
Change Your Life! To Be Released The Same Day Scammer Bernie Madoff Faces Sentencing

www.GetRichQuickFlick.com
(Los Angeles, California) - We've all heard the phrase, "get rich or die trying" right? Now a soon-to-be-released mockumentary movie is altering that mantra to say "get rich or die laughing" about it. Change Your Life! is an  independent comedy about get-rich-quick schemes directed & co-written by comedian Adam Christing.  Christing, who once got burnt himself by a network marketing Ponzi scheme, says many Americans are now broke or in debt because of get-rich-quick syndrome and he created the faux-film to show just how ridiculous these scams and scammers can be.

The funny-money movie spoof has been two years in the making and will be released on DVD on June 29th -- the same day that Bernie Madoff faces up to
150 years in prison.  Madoff pleaded guilty to running the biggest Ponzi scheme in history after cheating investors out of approximately 65 billion dollars. "It's not just Madoff," says Christing.  "People have been ripped off by multi-level marketing scams, the Nigerian e-mail hoax, even greedy ministers."  Christing's film makes fun of all of the above and also pokes fun at the best-selling instant-riches book The Secret.

The Ponzi scheme perpetrator in Change Your Life! is "Simon Martinez" played by veteran actor Tony Plana.  Plana has played the villain in shows like 24, but is currently cast as the loving Dad in Ugly Betty on NBC.  Christing says that Plana's money-grabbing character is a funny cross between Bernie Madoff and motivational speaker Tony Robbins. In one scene, a character playing a potential investor says, "I think this is a pyramid scheme." The greedy salesman character replies, "Oh, definitely not. Here have a business card" -- a business card that looks exactly like a pyramid.

And because he says the government isn't bailing out most Americans, Christing wants to help - or at least joke about it.  Christing is giving away funny-money Trillion Dollar Bills with the first 10,000 copies of Change Your Life! which will be available via Amazon.com and on the film's website:  www.GetRichQuickFlick.com

Copies of the movie can be purchased on the site for $14.95: www.GetRichQuickFlick.com

New Technology Helps Protect Sleeping Infants - And Gives Parents Peace Of Mind.
www.snuza.com

(West Hollywood, California) -- In recent years the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has been reducing, but it is still the leading cause of death for babies in their first year of life. Despite the overall  reduction in SIDS, parents are still being cautious by turning to
under-mattress movement monitoring devices on the market.  These conventional devices have brought some comfort to parents but just not
enough.  So now a new baby movement monitoring technology is being brought to North America by Pneo.  The Snuza Halo is a small, light, portable device that provides a unique new way to effectively monitor a sleeping infant.

How Does Snuza Halo Work?  http://www.snuza.com/pages/en/how-snuza-works/using-snuza.php

The Snuza Halo monitors the baby's movement by clipping, not to the crib  mattress, but gently to the baby's diaper near the stomach.   This ultra sensitive motion detector monitors and recognizes the baby's movement  constantly.   If the Snuza Halo does not sense movement within a 15 second time period, it does what you would do - try to stimulate your baby to breathe again. Snuza Halo does this by activating a pulsed vibration, which imitates a technique used by Hospital Neonatal Care Units worldwide called "Cutaneous Stimulation".  If movement is not sensed within a further 5 seconds of the vibration, an audible alarm is triggered to alert the parents  to the problem.

"Many of the infant monitors currently on the market are large, complicated to set-up and have electrical cables or straps which babies may get tangled  in," explains Charlotte Wenham, a Registered Nurse and Business Manager for  Pneo, makers of the Snuza Halo. "The Snuza is tiny yet extremely effective  and poses no danger to the infant whatsoever."

The Snuza Halo sells for $199 and will soon be available in retailers all over North America. For more information on the Snuza Halo or to find a retailer near you, visit www.snuza.com

Grilled Stuffed Peaches for four

  • Four large peaches

  • One cup fresh blackberries

  • One third cup brown sugar

  • Three tablespoons lime juice

Wash the four peaches, cut them in half and remove the pits. Place peaches on a double thick square of aluminum foil. Spoon two tablespoons of berries into each peach half. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over each peach half and squeeze one teaspoon of limejuice on each.

Fold aluminum foil over the peach halves and seal. Place on a hot grill and cook for fifteen to twenty minutes, turning once. Remove from heat. Slit open foil packets and serve. Great for dessert or as a side dish, grilled fruits are interesting and refreshing.

The Special Slaw

  • One medium head green cabbage

  • One quarter head medium size red cabbage

  • Three medium carrots

  • Finely chop both cabbage and carrots (or coarsely grate if you prefer), place in a large bowl and refrigerate.

 Dressing:

  • One and one half cups mayonnaise

  • One half cup white vinegar

  • Two tablespoons light corn syrup

  • One tablespoon sugar

  • One teaspoon dry mustard

  • One teaspoon celery salt

  • One teaspoon white pepper

  • One half teaspoon garlic powder

  • One half teaspoon Kosher salt

Mix together all of the dressing ingredients and refrigerate before serving. The trick to great cole slaw is to mix the cold cabbage and carrot mixture with the cold dressing just before serving. Pour dressing over cabbage/carrot mixture and toss. This will serve six to seven people. Have fun with your cooking and I hope to see you at Dillon's.

Sharlot Hall Museum Recruiting New Volunteers
Training Sessions for Volunteers Begin Oct. 7
Sharlot Hall Museum is offering training for Museum volunteers who can help in a variety of interesting, educational and just plain fun activities at the Museum.

Volunteer opportunities include interacting with visitors as tour guides or docents, helping out at Sharlot’s Timeless Treasures Gift Store, assisting at special events and festivals, maintaining the Museum’s showplace gardens, participating in Blue Rose Theater productions, or getting involved with the Museum’s extensive Collections.

Both new and continuing volunteers are invited to attend a series of 16 training sessions, which are the equivalent of a college course in area history. The Museum is offering a choice of weekly evening or morning sessions for volunteers. Evening sessions begin Wednesday, Oct. 7, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and morning sessions begin Thursday, Oct. 8, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Both evening and morning sessions are held in the Blue Rose Theater in the Lawler Exhibit Center Gallery on the Museum grounds, 415 W. Gurley St., in Prescott.

Training classes will cover a wide range of topics, including the Museum’s collection, the roots of Prescott’s historic preservation, the Chinese in Prescott, social life at Fort Whipple and the development of the railroad in Yavapai County. Volunteer training will also include Chautauquas (performance-based education) that allow volunteers to “meet” such memorable figures as Sharlot M. Hall, Paulino Weaver, John C. Frémont and others.

Classes are taught by Museum staff members and master docents. “This training gives volunteers a clear understanding of the history of Prescott, the background of the buildings on the campus, and knowledge of the interesting array of historical personages that have shaped our community,” explains Karen Churchill, the Museum’s assistant curator of education. While targeted at new volunteers, the classes are also valuable for current volunteers who would like a refresher course.

Tuition for the 15-session training course is $75 for new volunteers, which includes the price of an individual Museum membership. After 50 hours of service to the Museum, $25 will be refunded to the volunteer.

To register for volunteer training or for more information, contact Debbie Turner at debbie@sharlot.org or call 445-3122 ext. 18.

CouponMom.com can Save a Family of Four over $6000 a Year
Start saving money this school year, learn how to save with coupons and have more money for your family

As the kids head off to school, it’s a great time for Moms and Dads to school themselves in saving money at the grocery.  Coupon Mom Stephanie Nelson says a family of four can save over $6000 a year when they follow her system.
September is National Coupon Month and a great time to learn  how to strategically shop at www.CouponMom.com.

“Cost saving doesn’t mean sacrificing a healthy diet or the foods your family likes,”  says Nelson, “With meal planning strategies and simple recipes, families can enjoy cooking quick, delicious, and nourishing meals.  It’s never been simpler.”

CouponMom.com teaches all types of shoppers that a healthy diet for the whole family involves meal planning strategies, price comparison skills, practical recipes and combining store sales, promotions and coupons.

Coupon usage is definitely on the rise, and CouponMom's ten-fold increase in membership since early 2008 proves that more shoppers are looking for help with their grocery spending.

"Consumers are realizing that coupons are real money when the products they use are offered," said Nelson, "Our coupons are for popular products , just this month we have coupons from Kraft, Kellogg's, General Mills, Procter & Gamble and many other quality manufacturers.   We also have a great offer from restaurant.com, a gift certificate for $25 that you can buy for only $7.

As consumers realize the Coupon Mom system is "free money", with no registration required and no fee, the old stigma of using coupons has gone away.   As more people seek out help with their grocery spending, membership on the site has jumped from 180,000 in early 2008 to more than 1.8 million members now.

Nelson has been called "the rock star of the recession" by the Washington Post and has taught millions how to save with coupons on Oprah, The Today Show, CNN, Wall Street Journal, Good Housekeeping and Good Morning America.

Because of the recession, more than 40 million people nationally are printing online coupons, up 20 percent from last year, according to a recent report from the Simmons Market Research Bureau.

Nelson, a mother of two, says cutting your grocery bill in half is easy. She launched CouponMom.com eight years ago to show other shoppers what weekly sales and savings are available - saving them time, and of course, money.

Here are some of the Coupon Mom's favorite ways to "Strategically Shop" on a trip to the grocery store.
1. Pick one day a week to shop and plan your week's meals and snacks carefully to make a comprehensive shopping list. The extra planning time will save the time and expense of unplanned shopping trips mid-week.

2. Compare prices for your common items at a few nearby stores and cherry-pick the deals if necessary. Nelson finds the lowest prices on fresh produce and pantry basics at local discount stores and buys the rest of her week's groceries at a typical supermarket using sales, loss leaders, "buy one, get one free" offers and doubled coupons.

3. Study the stores' sales circulars and use online resources like www.couponmom.com to find the best sales. The free service does the work of finding coupons and deals for shoppers by listing grocery bargains at 41 retailers in 50 states.

4. Stock up on your common items when they are at their rock-bottom prices. By getting a few weeks' supply of an item, you will have enough on hand until the next sale. Getting in the cycle of stocking up in this way will get you out of the cycle of paying full price for anything.

5. Maximize your coupon inventory. Buy multiple copies of the Sunday newspaper during high coupon weeks, watch for coupon displays in the store, pay attention to your register receipt coupons, use electronic coupons at Kroger.com and even email the customer service contact at manufacturers' websites to request coupons for their products.

6. Sign up for your stores' loyalty cards and provide complete mailing and email information. You may be sent coupons for products you buy regularly.

The Surprising Truth about Diamonds: They’re Recession-Proof. But Why? And Why Buy Now?

New York, NY (July 28, 2009) - Diamonds have kept their value, even through the economic difficulties of the past year. Shoppers aren’t finding huge discounts on diamonds like they are on cars or other luxury items. Diamond prices, especially in the most popular carat sizes, for engagement rings, have remained relatively stable at a time when prices are falling for nearly everything else.

Although people pay half as much at the gas pump as they did last summer, and precious metals like platinum have plunged in value, diamond prices in the average range, have not fallen dramatically. Live market data from www.pricescope.com  , the Internet’s leading consumer advocacy and diamond information website, shows that colorless diamonds without visible flaws within the popular 1-2 carat size range have generally maintained the same average price from December 2007 to June 2009. (See graph below.)

"At a time when consumers are seeing prices slashed at high-end retailers like Neiman Marcus, and low-cost stores like Wal-Mart, the continued demand for diamonds has created stability in the marketplace and consumers are finding that prices have not changed appreciably," stated Garry Holloway Director of Pricescope.com.

These steady prices and continued demand have sparked diamond miner Anglo American PLC to step-up production for what they expect will be a busy holiday season. In addition, demand for diamonds is increasing in countries like China and India, and prices are projected to rise as global markets recover.

Another important consideration is that diamond Internet portal www.pricescope.com  has seen a surprising number of visitors even during the recent depths of economic worries. Budgets may be tighter in times of uncertainty, but shoppers are still very interested in diamonds. Consumers seeking the best quality for the best price are gravitating to the Internet for diamond information before making their purchases.

Between the November 2008 to May 2009 lows in the stock market, www.pricescope.com had 3,265,314 visits to the site versus 2,970,378, a 10% increase compared to same period of the previous year. With 1,825,066 unique users during November 2008 to May 2009 versus 1,756,786 from the previous year’s same period, and more than 2,000,000 posts on the site’s forums which are seeing further increases in traffic.

Another consideration is that shoppers with tighter budgets are probably using the Internet to compare diamond prices more now, before making their purchase, than they previously did. www.pricescope.com charts constant changes in diamond prices via the largest online database, so shoppers can utilize the changing information whether they shop online or at local retail stores. www.pricescope.com also has extensive diamond tutorials and a forum where shoppers can ask questions. Experts and knowledgeable consumers assist shoppers with their questions within a strict "no sales" environment.

Pricescope.com does not sell diamonds. It is the premier diamond education and consumer advocacy website on the Internet. Pricescope.com is the leading independent and unbiased resource for diamond price information via listings of diamonds for sale from many competing vendors. Pricescope.com strives to help consumers get the best quality diamonds for the best price.

Nov 14-22, 2009  Gilbert Days – Gilbert Days is a week-long celebration of Gilbert’s rich western heritage coming November 14-22, 2009. The celebration kicks off with the re-enactment of the historical Pony Express ride. The whole family is invited to participate in the ride and other family-friendly activities. The Gilbert Days Parade takes place Saturday morning and is a dazzling spectacle followed by the After Parade Party outside Gilbert Town Hall complete with food, entertainment, and a Chili Cook Off. Next are the showcase events for the cowboys and cowgirls that come from all over the country to participate in the Gilbert Days Jackpot Roping, Competition Barrel Racing and the Gilbert Days Budweiser IPRA Rodeo. Once again the Gilbert Days Budweiser IPRA Rodeo is co-sanctioned by the Grand Canyon State Rodeo Association. But before the adults have their fun, the little ones get to compete in the Lil’ Dudes Rodeo held before each adult rodeo competition. Right next to the Gilbert Rodeo Park arena is the Gilbert Days Carnival featuring rides, games, prizes, and mouth-watering concessions.
