Folk Arts Fair Issues Call for Folk Artists

                        The Sharlot Hall Museum is inviting folk artists, craftspeople and performers to participate in this year’s Folk Arts Fair, June 4-5 on the Museum grounds, 415 W. Gurley St. in Prescott. Participant application forms are available at the Museum and on the Museum’s website at http://sharlot.org/images/stories/festivals/FAF2011_applicationform.pdf. The deadline for submitting applications is Sunday, May 1.

            Under the banner of “Village of Traditions,” the fair will feature themed areas where artists of similar specialties will gather to demonstrate their skills. As always, the Fair’s emphasis is on demonstration and education rather than craft displays or sales. Demonstrators, performers and history interpreters will recreate many aspects of frontier life, including sheep shearing, candle-dipping, wood carving, survival skills and Dutch oven baking.

The Mesa Veterans Parade Association (MVPA) recently inducted its 2011 slate of officers. Bob Burns, founding member, returned to the presidency. Wes Waddle, an active Colonel in the AZ USAF, is second in command as the Vice president. Janice Shaproski has returned to keep the MVPA informed as Secretary and Karen Malta is addressing the financial aspect as our very competent Treasurer. The collective goal of these new officers is to have the best Veterans’ Parade we possibly can.

HOME SALES As of the end of January, 2011

      January sales dropped off substantially as was expected. There were 5440 closings in December. With 29,014 homes available for sale, that gives us a market supply of 5 1/4 months. Pending sales have moved up from December levels indicating that we should have in increase in the number of closes in February.

  There were a total of 78,336 closings in 2010, a drop from the 81,561 in 2009.

The news about the market continues to be mixed with many predicting that we will have a double dip and some bullish about the market. The fact remains that with the current combination of interest rates and pricing, this time frame will be looked at as one of the best buying markets in a long time.

  A few years from now most will say with regret, " I should have bought in 2011". 

  I am not sure about the rest of you, but to find a home in good condition, that is well priced, is extremely difficult and many of them get sold in a day or 2. There is a lot of inventory, even though levels are low, that is just plain "junk".

Even though the wait is longer with a short sale property, you have a good chance of a home in reasonable condition and some in very good condition because owner still lives there, may be getting relocation money if they stay and the house is intact when turned over and some just flat out good people that don’t want to mess their credit up any more than it is and yet have to move on.

Western History Symposium Set for August 6 in Prescott The ranch woman’s life, war, gold, softball and lovelorn suitors will be among the topics attracting scores of authors, historians, educators and western buffs to Prescott for the eighth annual Western History Symposium on Saturday, August 6 at the Sharlot Hall Museum. The Symposium, which opens at 10 a.m., is free and open to the public, although seating at the Museum is limited and available on a first-come basis.            This year’s Symposium includes five presentations at the Museum’s Lawler Exhibit Center (415 W. Clunker Math

 The person who  calculated this bit of information went to high school in

Pittsburgh,  Pa.    He is now & has been a professor at The   University of West Virginia in Morgantown, West Virginia for the last forty  some years. I never looked at the clunker program in such depth.   

 

Think of it this  way:  A clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year at 15 mpg uses 800  gallons of gas a year.  A vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year at 25  mpg uses 480 gallons a year.  So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year. They claim 700,000 vehicles so that's 224 million gallons saved per  year. That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.    5  million barrels is about 5 hours worth of US consumption.  More  importantly, 5 million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel costs about $350  million dollars So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save  $350 million.  We spent $8.57 for  every dollar we saved.   I'm pretty sure  they will do a great job with our health care, though.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed The Declaration of Independence?
Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died.
Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
 
 They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
 
 What kind of men were they?
 
 Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.  
 Eleven were merchants.
 Nine were farmers and large plantation owners... men of means...well educated...  but
 they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured
 
 Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.
 
 Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.
 
 He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding.  His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.
 
 Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
 
 At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British general, Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters.  He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.
 
 Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.
 
 John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she lay dying.  Their 13 children fled for their lives.  His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste.
 
 For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

So, please take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday to remember and silently thank these patriots.
 
 It's not much to ask, considering the price they paid.

Emotions are high as three diverse couples cope with the overwhelming, rewarding and comical consequences of conceiving a baby.  Follow the college students, barely at the beginning of their adult lives; the thirty-somethings, having trouble conceiving but determined to try; and the middle-aged parents, looking forward to seeing their last child graduate from college when a night of unexpected passion leads to a surprise pregnancy. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio appointed rock legend Ted Nugent deputy and was sworn in last summer in Arpaio’s downtown Phoenix office. Nugent is known for his conservative political views and defense of hunting and gun ownership rights.
