Buried at: Section 18D Site 957
NATIONAL MEMORIAL CEMETERY OF ARIZONA. Alden was apart of the battle for "Hamburger Hill" and sustained gunshot wounds that pierced him through both of his legs. Hamburger Hill is the story of the fight to take Dong Ap Bia in the A Shau Valley, during the Vietnam War. A Shau Valley was intense area of high NVA activity, logistically and strategically, and an important terminus for the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The 3/187th's battle for Dong Ngai and the discovery of mammoth supply depots in the area served to accentuate that point. "Operation Apache Snow" (the largest air mobile assault in the Vietnam war) was launched on May 10th, 1969 with 1800 men from 5 battalions. The fighting for Hill 937, "Hamburger Hill" (as it was nicknamed), was brutal and prolonged. The battle events occurred from May 10th through May21st, 1969. The total casualties of the American taking of Dong Ap Bia was 70 dead and 372 wounded. While battalions were policing the Dong Ap Bia battlefield, one imaginative soldier found a piece of cardboard C-ration box, wrote on it, "Hamburger Hill," and nailed it to a charred tree trunk. Shortly thereafter, another, perhaps more practical and blunt soldier, had added beneath the sign, "Was it worth it?" Found on the top and slopes of Dong Ap Bia was a landscape that resembled what they imagined hell must be like; all of the NVA's wore patches that read: "Kill the Americans." The courage and bravery of the soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division "Screaming Eagles" and all battalion soldiers ~ are true American heroes. The film "Hamburger Hill" has been criticized for it's vivid depiction of capturing the violence; yet all wars are brutal and violent. The debate about the value of Hamburger Hill was far from over. Alden was on the MHS JV Football team his sophomore year, wearing jersey # 86. Alden's sisters are: Linda (Farmer) Enfield, MHS; 1964 and Patricia (Farmer) Keefer.

The EOD was a very close occupational community at that time, as there were only about 140 of us in the entire Marine Corps. So, when we lost three on that accident it was tuff.
James is honored in remembrance on The EOD Memorial at Elgin AFB, Florida USA.
