GO GREEN
Tips for Going Green
Reduce your Carbon Imprint
1. Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
2. Replace bulbs with new low energy  bulbs.
3. Reuse shopping bags
4. Carpool
5. Conserve water
6. Inflate tires
7. Recycle
8. About 90 percent of the energy used to wash clothes goes to heating the water. Cool things off and save 349 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Household Tips
Pour a packet of lemonade Kool-Aid (the only flavor that works) into the detergent cup and run the dishwasher while empty. The citric acid in the mix wipes out stains! And it smells lemon fresh!

Eliminate ear mites. All it takes is a few drops of Wesson Corn Oil in your cat's ear... massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

Easy eyeglass protection... to prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear Nail Polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

Smart splinter remover: Just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.

Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional pain relievers?

Rainy day cure for dog odor: Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Kills fleas instantly... Dawn Dishwashing Liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.

Did you know that Colgate Toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns?

Use leftover eggshells to shine your glassware. Simply drop some crushed shells in vase, add warm water and a drop of dishwashing liquid, and give it a good swirl

A simple spruce up for the microwave: place a bowl of water mixed with lemon juice inside and run the machine on high for one minute, wipe out to clean.

Use Your Rice Cooker to Steam Towels.

Slather your hands with lotion, then wrap them in the steamed towels until cool.

Here are the five most common early warning signs of a heart attack:
-- Chest pain.
-- Pain or discomfort in the neck and jaw.
-- Pain or discomfort in the arm, shoulder or back.
-- Sudden feeling of profound fatigue.
-- Sudden shortness of breath.

The new deadline is Thursday, Oct. 30 (moved from Friday, Oct. 24).

OPEN LETTER FROM JOHN MCCCAIN

My Friends,

During Tuesday's town hall debate in Nashville, I told a retired Navy chief in the audience that everything I ever learned about leadership I learned from a chief petty officer in the Navy. My career in the United States Navy has had a lasting impact on my life and the lessons I learned continue to guide me today.

The naval term "steady strain" has become a constant mantra throughout my life. It references the need to keep lines between ships steady to avoid a sudden jerk or movement that could easily snap the line. We're facing great challenges as a nation and we must keep a "steady strain," because it is not only essential at sea, but in life and in politics.

I strongly believe a "steady strain," made possible by the grassroots organization we've built across the country, is the path to our victory on November 4th.

Bison Museum 1st Anniversary!

October 18th
16641 N 91st St  (South Bell Rd & 91st) Scottsdale AZ

As much as we love the
"American Old West"
the very things we love about it are disappearing every day.
That's why
capturing the stories
of the old west,
straight from the
"People Who Have Kept
the Spirit of the Old West Alive"
is an important project.

“Spirit of the Old West Alive” is a project
co-sponsored by
the Bison Museum
 in Scottsdale.

We will be moderating a series of lectures on “People Who Keep the Spirit of the West Alive” to be audience viewed and video taped oral histories. The edited videos will be played online and around the country in museums promoting the history of the west. They will go into archives for future historians.
This all starts in October 2008 and the series of lectures should run through at least 2012, Arizona’s Centennial.

As I think of the people who keep the “Spirit of the Old West Alive” I thought of you. You know someone whose efforts keep the time honored spirit of the west. Or you know a company that would want to sponsor these lectures. Or you know a charitable organization that would like to share these evenings to spread their message and raise funds. If you are interested please contact me so we can begin planning and scheduling a time for your participation in any of the three opportunities mentioned above.

Join us as we interview and record oral histories before they fade away...

I would also appreciate your spreading the word to your friends about
“People Who Keep the Spirit of the Old West Alive!”

Thank you for your kind consideration of participation in this worthy project.

Sister has felt banners, a filmstrip, handouts, historical facts and hysterical insights to explain every nun¹s goal: getting into heaven and bringing along as many of the faithful as possible. Using a special version of Chutes and Ladders to demonstrate her point, Sister tells us where we¹ve gone wrong, and no one is excused from her firm belief that "sometimes we feel guilty because we are guilty."

QB Kurt Warner Wins Ed Block Courage Award
Quarterback Kurt Warner has been named the Arizona Cardinals winner of the Ed Block Courage Award, given to the player who best exemplifies the principals of sportsmanship and courage in the face of adversity.

In his second season with the Cardinals, Warner opened the year as the team’s starting quarterback. After four games, Arizona handed the reins to rookie Matt Leinart but Warner remained the consummate teammate and has been instrumental in the development of the young QB. Warner will start this weekend at San Diego in place of the injured Leinart in the final game of the 2006 season.

He is also one of the most active and charitable players in the community, volunteering his time for youths around the Valley and having an active role in Arizona through his “First Things First” foundation.

The Ed Block Courage Award is given out each year in a vote by teammates to one player on each of the 32 NFL teams. Other winners from around the NFL include Jerome McDougle of Philadelphia, Deuce McAllister of New Orleans, Ken Hamlin of Seattle, Rex Grossman of Chicago and Carson Palmer of Cincinnati.

Recipients from all 32 NFL teams will receive the honor at the 29th Annual Ed Block Courage Awards on March 20th, 2007 in Baltimore, MD. All proceeds from the event in March benefit the Foundation's Courage House National Support Network.

Arizona Cowboy Mounted Shooters Association, ACMSA, is presenting a free mounted shooting workshop for beginners who have never participated in a mounted shooting event on February 10, 2007 at Larkyn Memorial Arena in New River, Arizona.  Registration begins at 8:30 and the workshop starts at 9:00 a.m. sharp.  The workshop will last about 2 to 3 hours.  Information and a signup link can be found at acmsa.com.  Updates and any changes necessitated by weather can also be found there.

Robert Morris, the workshop manager, said “ACMSA is sponsoring this workshop to bring new people into mounted shooting.  I personally could not even ride when I saw my first mounted shooting event and decided to get started.   I want others to experience the fun and sense of accomplishment that I feel a couple of years later”.

The program features Cave Creek’s own 2005 World Champion, Annie Bianco-Ellett, and New River’s 2006 Arizona State Champion, Dan Byrd.  Prospective mounted shooters can either bring a horse to ride or audit from the ground without a horse.   The purpose of the workshop is to provide information, advice and contacts to people of any age or ability who want to get started in this fun sport that celebrates the Old West.

Attendees with horses will be able to ride their personal horses at a safe speed and receive tips on how to train the horse and horsemanship.  Information on local trainers and shooting practices will be available.  Attendees will not be shooting at this workshop.

Attendees without horses will be provided practical advice on finding a horse and training themselves and that horse.  Just bring your cowboy hat!  ACMSA has many members who started with just a cowboy hat and a desire to learn.  By learning to ride and getting a safe horse, many of our beginner members were able to participate and advance while having a lot of fun.

Any prospective mounted shooter will find a supportive and non-competitive atmosphere when starting.  There are about 32 different classes split by gender, age and ability which allow everyone to compete against others at the same level.  New participants often remark on how welcoming and friendly this sport is.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting uses blank ammunition in the famous Old West Colt Single Action Peacemaker.  The ammunition is used to break balloons on a timed course.  There is no bullet, just a crimped case filled with black powder.  The unburned black powder exits the barrel and will break a balloon to about a 20 foot range.  Plus, participants wear either 1880s or Silver Screen clothing to add a sense of history and fun.  We play Cowboy with real clothes, horses and revolvers (but blank ammunition)!

Subjects covered will be safety, horse selection, practice and training venues, revolvers, course management and horsemanship.  Participants should leave with all the information they need to get started with Cowboy Mounted Shooting.

Annie Bianco-Ellett has won too many titles to count.  In addition to being the top female competitor, she has also brought many new riders into this sport.  She holds individual and “boot camp” training sessions locally.  She is national spokeswoman for Cowboy Mounted Shooting.  She will demonstrate and work with participants on technique, course management and equipment.

Dan Byrd has a background in rodeo, polo and horse training.  Since starting just a couple of years ago he has quickly advanced to one of the top shooters in the state and nation.  He trains shooting horses as a profession and has supplied many match ready horses to the sport.  He trains out of New River and Desert Hills, Arizona.  Dan will work with participants on horse selection, horse training, and horsemanship.

This free workshop will have a limited number of participants.  Please signup by going to www.acmsa.com   as soon as possible.  Email is being used for signups, but a spot can also be reserved via telephone at 480-563-9015.  Contact:  Robert Morris:  480-563-9015, Robert@jmphotoart.com

Tiger on Golf
"It's nice when you get on a roll like this where the things are just happening," says Tiger Woods. "I got some lucky breaks, some great bounces. This isn't all about hitting perfect shots and making every putt. That's a lot of luck on my side and a lot of things have to go right. But also my mechanics, from all the work I've done with Hank (Haney) and my changes are starting to come together," Tiger comments on his play during his final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship this past Labor Day weekend.
Tiger fired an 8-under-par 63 on Labor Day Monday to win by two strokes at the Tournament Players Club of Boston, his fifth-straight PGA Tour victory and the 53rd of his career. It marked the seventh triumph of the season for Woods, who earned $990,000, pushing his season total to over $8.6 million, and clinched PGA Tour Player of the Year honors for the seventh time in eight years. Woods closed 1999 by winning his last four events, then opened 2000 with two victories. As good as he was then, most everyone would agree the 30-year-old Woods is better now. He has now claimed titles in 23 different PGA Tour tournaments, proving who is the best player in the world.

Get A Hot Stick
Hot Stix Golf located in North Scottsdale was developed and engineered on the premise that having the best clubs available, thoroughly and expertly fitted, will enhance your game. Step one of this two part objective is rigorous testing of each new advancement in golf equipment, utilizing state-of-the-art systems, allowing Hot Stix to identify and stock the very best components that the industry has to offer. The second and most important aspect is to fit the right equipment to each players unique profile. In 2000, owner Mark Timms built the 7,000 square foot Hot Stix Golf facility. In the subsequent years, the facility has grown to over 14,0000 square feet, incorporating an extensive research and development sector and a mobile fitting and building unit. Between Hot Stix Golf, Hot Stix Technologies, and Hot Stix Mobile, the company employs and contracts out over 35 of the Nations best and brightest in their respective fields including teaching professionals include Allen Gobeski, Stormy Narramore, Jason Lulloff. Each of these people with the ultimate goal that putting the best possible equipment in your hands will keep you coming back and lower your scores!
With over 14,000 square feet of club fitting, research and development, and club building capacity, Hot Stix is not afraid to boast the title of premier club fitting organization in the world. Building a mobile unit designed to bring everything Hot Stix Golf has to offer to your driving range has been no easy undertaking over the last year. Of course it’s hard to match the seven private hitting bays each with 42  inch plasma touch screen televisions that display data from any one of the three 21 inch flat screen computer monitors. However the 55 plus foot mobile unit relies on the latest in plasma technology from Sony with a 50 inch flat screen and Bose surround sound topping the charts. The mobile unit has the expertise and capability to build anything required out of your session. Whether at our stand-alone facility or at our traveling "three ring circus", you can expect that the two hours you spend one on one with our fitters to look at your woods and irons will be a life changing experience. Interpreting the collaborating data from Swing Dynamics, Vector, Achiever, and Flight Scope launch monitors leaves you personal club fitter with their hands full. Rest assured, you’re not required to do much thinking, you just swing the golf club and leave the rest to Hot Stix. Not yet available on the mobile unit, Hot Stix Golf utilizes a 24-camera putter-fitting studio that many of the OEM’s are trying to duplicate. All in all, Hot Stix is the type of facility you must see to believe. We look forward to working with you! HotStix John German Director of Operations was recently featured on TV 3 Good Morning Arizona talked about the technology and all of the changes it brings to the game of golf. SCOTTSDALE RANKS HIGH IN GOLF DIGEST
The ballots are in! Readers of Golf Digest have ranked more than 4,000 of North America’s best public and resort golf courses  with several Scottsdale-area courses receiving outstanding rankings. Created as a magazine insert more than 30 years ago, "Places to Play" is now in its seventh edition.  With this latest version of rankings compiled from approximately 20,000 Golf Digest readers who filled out course ballots and shared their opinions and experiences on more than 4,000 courses in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Caribbean. Top courses in Scottsdale include Grayhawk Golf Club, The Golf Club at Eagle Mountain, TPC Scottsdale, Troon North Golf Club, Talking Stick Golf Club, We-Ko-Pa Golf Club and Legend Trail Golf Club, all of which received the outstanding ranking of four-and-a-half stars  just shy of the five-star superb ranking. Golf Digest readers reviewed thousands of courses they played over the previous year and rated them using a five-point scale. The scale covered five separate criteria: the overall golf experience, value for the money, standard of service at the facility, overall conditioning of the course, and the normal pace of play for an 18-hole round of golf. In addition, readers were invited to write comments on their experiences at each of the courses they rated both the good and bad. Each comment was then reviewed by a team of editors who ensured the comments were fair, accurate and representative of the sample. Reader star ratings were then averaged and compiled on a bell curve to reflect a course's relative strength. The Golf Digest accolades continue for Scottsdale as part of the magazine’s recent "America's Greatest Golf-Home Towns" ranking featured in their June 2006 issue. According to estimates from the National Association of Realtors, Americans purchased more than 1 million vacation homes in 2005 and golf was a deciding factor in nearly one-third of these purchases. In determining the rankings, Golf Digest rated 244 counties and detailed the 10 best communities for golfers in eight different regions throughout the country. Scottsdale received the top ranking for the West region which was followed by Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Maui and San Diego in that order. Golf Digest ranked the counties on the following criteria: number and quality of courses, golf days per year and course congestion, as well as crime rates, airport access, off-course amenities and cost of living. South Carolina's resort town of Myrtle Beach was selected as America's number one golf-home community overall. To search for Scottsdale-area courses as part of the latest “Places to Play” rankings, visit http://www.golfdigest.com/  To view the nation’s top-10 ranked communities in by region, visit www.GolfDigest.com/realestate.

SHANE AND ANDREA DOAN WIN 2007 PAT TILLMAN AWARD
The Phoenix Coyotes are proud to announce that Coyotes captain Shane Doan and his wife Andrea will be honored with a 2007 Pat Tillman Community Leadership Award. Seven winners are recognized in different categories and the Doan’s are honored in the Professional Athletes category.

“Andrea and I would both like to thank The Leadership Consortium, the Pat Tillman foundation and KTAR for this award,” said Coyotes captain Shane Doan. “It is a great honor to receive this award from a foundation which does such an incredible job of encouraging community involvement in sports. My family is grateful to live in the Valley and be part of such a great community. To give back in any way is always gratifying, it is the least we can do to be involved in the community and the Valley. Many thanks to the foundation and to the Phoenix Coyotes.”

The awards are named in honor of Pat Tillman, the ASU alumnus and Arizona Cardinals football player who was tragically killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan. They recognize individuals who have demonstrated courage of their convictions and served as excellent role models for youth, and organizations, which have worked to enhance the relationship among athletes and sports organizations.

“The Phoenix Coyotes would like to congratulate Shane and Andrea for being honored with such a meaningful award,” said Douglas Moss, Coyotes President and COO. “The Doan’s are a great example of the positive impact professional athletes and their families can make in a community. They constantly give 100% towards helping others and unselfishly give of their time, money and support to various groups and charities. This award is an honor to receive and we are proud that Shane and Andrea have represented the team and organization so well.”

Shane and Andrea are committed to being active in the community as a couple and separately. In one example of his many charitable endeavors, Shane hosted and skated with over 200 underprivileged children from the Thomas J. Pappas School at the ALLTEL Ice Den in Scottsdale on April 2nd. He provided the ice time, pizza and funded transportation to and from the rink for the students. Shane later bought and provided almost 600 tickets for the students and their family members to attend a Coyotes game on April 5th.

Shane is a dedicated leader for the team on the ice and he takes his responsibility as a role model in the community very seriously. This past season, Shane could be seen on television in a public service announcement advising people to avoid tobacco use.

In addition to buying Holiday gifts for hospital patients, Andrea led a toy collection for the West Valley Child Crisis Center outside Jobing.com Arena prior to a Coyotes game. She was also part of the ‘Operation Santa’ food drive in December where fans were asked to bring food items to a Coyotes game to donate to the Westside Food Bank.

What the family didn’t give in time, energy and money, they gave of themselves, literally. Andrea and their eight-year-old daughter Gracie each had more than eight inches of their long hair cut off for the Pantene “Beautiful Lengths” project which accepts hair donations to create wigs for cancer patients free of charge. They incorporated it into a Coyotes game as they had their hair cut on the bench during an intermission.

The winners will be recognized at the KTAR Presents Llinking Sports and Communities Banquet Hosted by Outback Steakhouse on September 24th at Chase Field. For more information visit www.phoenixcoyotes.com, www.ktar.com   or www.linkingsports.com .

ONTARIO REIGNS ON ROADRUNNERS PARADE 3-2 IN OVERTIME
Phoenix Visits Ontario at 7:00 p.m. Saturday

The Phoenix RoadRunners outshot the Ontario Reign 39-31 but lost in overtime 3-2 in front of 1,811 fans on Halloween night at US Airways Center.

The RoadRunners (3-2-1) opened up the first period with a power play at 1:22 but weren’t able to capitalize.  The rest of the period was pretty even with Ontario (4-2-0) outshooting Phoenix 11-9 and the game remaining scoreless going into the first intermission.

In the second period, the Reign got on the board first at 5:39 with a power play goal scored by Job Francisco off a rebound by Geoff Walker.  Andrew Martens had the other assist as Ontario went up 1-0.  Phoenix was able to come back and tie the game 1-1 at 15:24 though when Mitch Carefoot scored a power play goal from the bottom of the left circle.  Matt Fornataro and Michael Wilson had the assists while the tie held into the second intermission.

“It was good timing to have a week of practice,” RoadRunners Head Coach Brad Church said of the team’s week off before Friday night’s game.  “We touched on a lot of system work and it showed tonight.”

Ontario scored its second power play goal of the night at 6:50 of the third period when Dusty Collins fed a pass to Walker who scored from the left of RoadRunners’ goalie Craig Kowalski.  Martens had the other assist as the Reign took a 2-1 lead.  Twelve seconds later, however, Phoenix tied up the game 2-2 when Rob Dmytruk scored his first of the season from the slot at 7:02.  Wes Clark and Brett Peterson had the assists.

“To score right after a goal like that is big,” Church said, adding that it was a good response from the RoadRunners.  “(Ontario) is a hard-working team and to shut down their offense like that is big.”

The RoadRunners put the pressure on Reign goalie Jeff Zatkoff at the end of the period but weren’t able to score as regulation ended with a 2-2 score.

The energy Phoenix had at the end of the third period did not carry into overtime, however, and Ontario was able to capitalize on a turnover and Martens scored the game-winning goal 2:19 into OT top-shelf over Kowalski.  Tim Kraus had the assist, making the final score 3-2.

“We were too passive in overtime,” Church said.  “I told the guys we didn’t play too tough, that we need to be aggressors and that’s something we need to address.”

Kowalski had 28 saves on the night while Zatkoff had 37.

The RoadRunners visit the Ontario Reign at 7:00 p.m. Saturday at Citizens Business Bank Arena.  Catch all the action live on Independent 1310 KXAM beginning with “RoadRunners Countdown” at 6:40 p.m.

Phoenix returns to US Airways Center to open a three-game home-stand at 7:05 p.m. Monday as they welcome the defending National Conference Champion Las Vegas Wranglers.

PETERSON ASSIGNED FROM AHL GRAND RAPIDS

Desjardins Recalled to Worcester; Sawatske Traded To Cincinnati

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL, a proud affiliate of the San Jose Sharks and the Worcester Sharks, announced today that veteran defenseman Brett Peterson has been assigned to the club from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League, center Andrew Desjardins has been recalled to Worcester of the American Hockey League, and defenseman Tom Sawatske has been traded to the Cincinnati Cyclones in exchange for future considerations.

Peterson, 27, signed a free agent contract with Grand Rapids on Sep. 5 after collecting four goals and 14 points and 101 penalty minutes in 69 games last season with the Florida Everblades.  The Northborough, Mass. native and fifth-year professional appeared in two games earlier this year with the Flint Generals of the International Hockey League where he notched a goal and recorded two penalty minutes.

Peterson has spent the majority of his professional career in the ECHL skating with Atlantic City, Johnstown, and Florida.  The former Boston College defenseman has registered 21 goals, 53 assists, and 334 penalty minutes in 278 ECHL games.

Desjardins, 22, notched two goals and six penalty minutes in five games with the RoadRunners.  The Lively, Ontario native and second-year professional signed an AHL-ECHL two-way contract with the Sharks after posting 22 goals and 59 points in 64 games in 2007-08 with the Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League.

Sawatske, 24, did not record a point in five games with the RoadRunners.  The Duluth, Minn. native and second-year professional was acquired by the RoadRunners along with defenseman Taylor Christie on Feb. 6, 2008 in exchange for center Scott Kelman.  Sawatske scored a goal and added four assists in 18 games last season with the RoadRunners and finished his rookie campaign with three goals and 10 points in 57 games.

The RoadRunners conclude their six-game season-opening home-stand at 7:05 p.m Friday as they welcome the Ontario Reign for the first time to US Airways Center.

Great seats are still available beginning as low as $8 and can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at (480) 784-4444, purchasing online ticketmaster.com or visiting the US Airways Center Box Office.  Information on season tickets, half-season packages, and flex plans for the 2008-09 season of Phoenix RoadRunners Hockey are available by calling (602) 462-GOAL.

UFC STAR DAN SEVERN TO APPEAR AT FRIDAY’S GAME
Phoenix Hosts Idaho at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday

The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL, a proud affiliate of the San Jose Sharks and the Worcester Sharks, are pleased to announce that Ultimate Fighting Championship Hall of Famer and Arizona State alumnus Dan “The Beast” Severn will make an appearance and sign autographs Friday when the RoadRunners host the Idaho Steelheads at 7:05 p.m. at US Airways Center.

Severn will hold a pre-game speaking engagement with local wrestling teams from across Arizona and drop the opening puck.  He will be available on the concourse during intermissions to sign autographs and take pictures.

Severn, 54, was a four-time All-American wrestler at Arizona State University and an alternate on the 1984 and 1988 United States Olympic Teams.  After participating as an amateur in numerous competitions across the world, the Coldwater, Mich. native became the first world-class wrestler to join the UFC when he stepped into “The Octagon” for the first time in 1994.

On May 17, 1996, Severn was crowned UFC Superfight Champion in his home state of Michigan after defeating Ken Shamrock to become what is still the only triple-crown UFC champion in the sport today.  He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on April 16, 2005.

The RoadRunners continue their six-game season-opening home-stand at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday as they welcome the Idaho Steelheads to US Airways Center for the opening game of a two-game series.

STEELHEADS TOPPLE ROADRUNNERS 3-1

Phoenix Hosts Idaho at 7:05 p.m. Friday

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Phoenix RoadRunners got on the board first but suffered three unanswered goals as they lost to the Idaho Steelheads 3-1 Wednesday night in front of 2,151 fans at U.S. Airways Center.

The RoadRunners (2-2-0) got off to a quick start when Andrew Desjardins scored a power play goal 58 seconds into the game from in front of the crease off a rebound by Mitch Carefoot.  Kimbi Daniels had the other assist, giving Phoenix a 1-0 lead.

“He scored a big goal early,” Head Coach Brad Church said of Desjardins.  “But (overall) we were out-worked, we were out-played, and it was a pretty embarrassing effort.”

Phoenix started off the second period on a power play from a 5-minute major spearing penalty on Steelheads’ defenseman Matt Stephenson that carried over from the end of the first, but the RoadRunners were not able to capitalize.  After much neutral zone play, Idaho (1-0-1) was able to get on the board at 16:07 when Brent Shepheard scored an unassisted wrap-around goal, tying the game at 1-all.

The Steelheads came out in the third period with an early goal by Garett Bembridge from in front of the crease at 1:43.  Ben Nelson and Steve Gainey had the assists on the go-ahead goal that gave Idaho a 2-1 lead.  Then at 4:59 of the third, Marty Flichel scored a power play goal from the top of the left circle off a pass from Gainey.  Bembridge had the other assist as the Steelheads went up 3-1, which would end up being the final score.

Looking ahead to Friday’s rematch between the two teams, Church just wants his team to show up prepared.

“It doesn’t matter how much we preach X’s and O’s, we’re going to be a mediocre team if we don’t show up and play,” he said.

Phoenix outshot Idaho 32-26 in the loss.  RoadRunners’ goalie Gerald Coleman had 23 saves while Steelhead rookie Matt Climie had 31 saves.

The RoadRunners continue their six-game season-opening home-stand at 7:05 p.m Friday as they conclude a two-game series with the Idaho Steelheads at US Airways Center.  Ultimate Fighting Champion Hall of Famer and Arizona State alumnus Dan “The Beast” Severn will be on hand to drop the opening puck and sign autographs throughout the night.

October 26: General Interest
1881 : Shootout at the OK Corral

On this day in 1881, the Earp brothers face off against the
Clanton-McLaury gang in a legendary shootout at the OK Corral
in Tombstone, Arizona.

After silver was discovered nearby in 1877, Tombstone quickly
grew into one of the richest mining towns in the Southwest.
Wyatt Earp, a former Kansas police officer working as a bank
security guard, and his brothers, Morgan and Virgil, the town
marshal, represented "law and order" in Tombstone, though they
also had reputations as being power-hungry and ruthless. The
Clantons and McLaurys were cowboys who lived on a ranch
outside of town and sidelined as cattle rustlers, thieves and
murderers. In October 1881, the struggle between these two
groups for control of Tombstone and Cochise County ended in
a blaze of gunfire at the OK Corral.

On the morning of October 25, Ike Clanton and Tom McLaury
came into Tombstone for supplies. Over the next 24 hours, the
two men had several violent run-ins with the Earps and their
friend Doc Holliday. Around 1:30 p.m. on October 26, Ike's
brother Billy rode into town to join them, along with Frank
McLaury and Billy Claiborne. The first person they met in the
local saloon was Holliday, who was delighted to inform them
that their brothers had both been pistol-whipped by the Earps.
Frank and Billy immediately left the saloon, vowing revenge.

Around 3 p.m., the Earps and Holliday spotted the five
members of the Clanton-McLaury gang in a vacant lot behind
the OK Corral, at the end of Fremont Street. The famous
gunfight that ensued lasted all of 30 seconds, and around 30
shots were fired. Though it's still debated who fired the first
shot, most reports say that the shootout began when Virgil
Earp pulled out his revolver and shot Billy Clanton point-blank
in the chest, while Doc Holliday fired a shotgun blast at Tom
McLaury's chest. Though Wyatt Earp wounded Frank McLaury
with a shot in the stomach, Frank managed to get off a few
shots before collapsing, as did Billy Clanton. When the dust
cleared, Billy Clanton and the McLaury brothers were dead,
and Virgil and Morgan Earp and Doc Holliday were wounded.
Ike Clanton and Claiborne had run for the hills.

Sheriff John Behan of Cochise County, who witnessed the
shootout, charged the Earps and Holliday with murder. A month
later, however, a Tombstone judge found the men not guilty,
ruling that they were "fully justified in committing these
homicides." The famous shootout has been immortalized in
many movies, including Frontier Marshal (1939), Gunfight at
the OK Corral (1957), Tombstone (1993) and Wyatt Earp (1994).
