CHAMBER EVENTS SCROLL DOWN***************
myID.com is offering up 6 signs that you may have been the victim of personal identity theft.
Short of noticing that new credit cards have been opened in your name when you check (you are checking your annual credit report, right?), the signs that you may have been a victim may be subtle. The following are red flags:
1. Your credit card statement shows purchases you did not make. Checking your credit card statement monthly can alert you if your identity has been compromised or if your credit card number has been stolen. You often have a month or two to dispute charges on your credit card, but after several months, the credit card company will no longer remove the fraudulent charge. Upon discovering unauthorized purchases, contact your bank or credit card company immediately and also get a copy of your credit report.
2. You are unexpectedly denied credit. Your credit is good but you get denied a car loan. This can be a sign that an identity thief has opened additional lines of credit in your name and increased the amount of debt reported by the credit reporting agency. Contact the credit issuer and request details about what led to their decision. Get a copy of your credit report and look for accounts opened in your name.
3. You receive an unexpected change of address form from the post office. Identity thieves will commonly redirect your mail to another address so they can steal bills and account statements. Contact the post office immediately to reverse the change of address request.
4. Debt collection companies contact you about debts that are not yours. Oftentimes this means that someone has been establishing debts in your name. Be sure to get as much information from the debt collector as you can, including what company the debt is being collected for, when the debt was taken out, and a billing address, if possible.
5. You notice that some of your mail is missing. Identity thieves routinely steal bills and financial statements from victims' mailboxes. If you notice that some of your mail is missing, contact the post office immediately and check for identity theft by monitoring your bank and credit card statements closely.
6. You are questioned about or arrested for a crime you did not commit. Identity theft can be extremely dangerous if the thief has enough information to get a government-issued identification with your name and their picture on it. Go directly to the police.
If you suspect you have been the victim of personal identity theft, contact the police and FTC immediately to report suspicious activity.
Protect yourself against identity theft. With MyID's identity theft monitoring service, you will receive instant identity theft notifications whenever a new account is opened in your name as detected by our real-time identity verification network. In nearly every case, these alerts allow you to stop charges to the account before any damage is done. MyID can also work with you if you have already been victimized. www.myid.com
