(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) – Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present The Manhattan Transfer on Thursday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m. at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix.

Tickets are available for $44 and $54 online at www.ScottsdalePerformingArts.org or through the Patron Services Box Office at (480) 994-ARTS (2787), ext. 2.

One of the most innovative vocal groups in the history of popular music, The Manhattan Transfer has achieved worldwide sales in the millions, Grammy Awards by the dozen and countless sold-out international tours.

The Manhattan Transfer’s release of its self-titled debut in 1975 marked the beginning of a constant stream of hit songs that would find an enthusiastic audience worldwide, from its first, the remake of the Friendly Brothers gospel classic, Operator, to the Weather Report song Birdland, which would become the group’s anthem and earn its first two Grammy Awards. Among its many other hits are Route 66, Boy from New York City and Chanson D’Amour.

The Manhattan Transfer’s latest album, The Chick Corea Songbook, brings the group’s infectious harmonies and hip, one-of-a-kind style to the work of this jazz fusion master. AllAboutJazz.com reviewer Jerry D’Souza noted, “Manhattan Transfer is back, and in top-notch form with a marvelous blend of melody and song.”

This performance is presented with support from China Mist Tea, Scottsdale League for the Arts and Sky Mountain Limousine.

The Mystical Arts of Tibet: Sacred Music Sacred Dance for World Healing
March 5, 2011, Saturday @ 8 p.m.
Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts

(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) – Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present The Mystical Arts of Tibet: Sacred Music Sacred Dance for World Healing on Saturday, March 5, at 8 p.m. in the Virginia G. Piper Theater.

Tickets are available for $29 and $39 online at www.ScottsdalePerformingArts.org or through the Patron Services Box Office at (480) 994-ARTS (2787), ext. 2.

Returning by popular demand, the celebrated multiphonic singers from Tibet’s Drepung Loseling Monastery will share their centuries-old sacred traditions in this one-night performance. Robed in magnificent costumes and playing traditional Tibetan instruments – from 10-foot long dung-chen horns to gyaling trumpets – the monks will perform ancient temple music and dances that are believed to generate energies conducive to world healing.

The Mystical Arts of Tibet tour is co-produced by Richard Gere Productions and Drepung Loseling Institute, the North American Seat of Drepung Loseling Monastery, India. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the tour has three basic purposes: to make a contribution to world peace and healing; to generate awareness of the endangered Tibetan civilization; and to raise support for the Tibetan refugee community in India.

The monks of Drepung Loseling have performed with Paul Simon, Philip Glass, Eddie Brickell, Natalie Merchant, Patti Smith, the Beastie Boys and the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, to name but a few. In addition to recording several albums, they are featured on the Golden Globe-nominated soundtrack of the film Seven Years in Tibet, starring Brad Pitt.

The Drepung Loseling monks will be in residence from March 3–6 at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, creating a mandala sand painting inside the Dayton Fowler Grafman Atrium and presenting a variety of free lectures and discussions.

MANDALA SAND PAINTING  From all the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, painting with colored sand ranks as one of the most exquisite. Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of days or weeks to form the image of a mandala. Extraordinarily beautiful, the mandala takes several days to complete and exists for only a short time before it is ritualistically destroyed as a metaphor for the impermanence of life.  The mandala sand painting will begin with an opening ceremony consecrating the site on Thursday, March 3, at noon. The closing ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 6, at 2 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public. The public is invited to view the creation of the mandala at the following times: Thursday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sunday, noon – 5 p.m.; and through evening performances.

FREE PUBLIC LECTURES AND CEREMONIES :

  • Mandala Sand Painting Opening Ceremony Thursday, March 3, 2011, Noon – 1 p.m. Dayton Fowler Grafman Atrium

  •  “From Confusion to Enlightenment: Steps in Inner Evolution” Friday, March 4, 2011, Noon – 1 p.m. Free presentation and discussion in Stage 2

  •  “Tibet Today: The History of a Diaspora” Saturday, March 5, 2011, Noon – 1 p.m. Free presentation and discussion in Stage 2

  • “Opening Your Heart” Sunday, March 6, 2011, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Free presentation and discussion in Stage 2

The Center is among the most important projects of architect Bennie Gonzales, who designed the 1975 adobe-inspired building as part of the Scottsdale Civic Center complex. A major renovation in 2009 by architect John Douglas modernized the Center’s main entrance and interiors. The cool and spacious Dayton Fowler Grafman Atrium welcomes visitors and showcases Kana Tanaka’s radiant glass sculpture, Spirit of Camelback, commissioned by the Scottsdale Public Art Program. Known for its intimacy and comfort, the Center’s state-of-the-art, 853-seat Virginia G. Piper Theater envelopes with its warm, wood interiors and excellent acoustics, while its gently sloped seating and superior viewing connect audience and artist. Additional venues include the Center’s 137-seat Stage 2 theater and neighboring 1,800-capacity Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater. The Center is located on a lush, 21-acre urban park, a short walk from Scottsdale’s Old Town and gallery districts. Nearby attractions include Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE and Louise Nevelson’s Windows to the West sculptures as well as the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) with James Turrell’s Knight Rise skyspace.
